AMD EMBEDDED SOLUTIONS GUIDE

hen we introduced the
AMD Embedded G-
Series Accelerated Pro-
cessing Unit (APU)
platform in 2011, it
was a watershed moment for the embedded
market. e combination of a low-power
CPU and discrete-class GPU into a single
APU enabled us to reach new heights for
multimedia and parallel processing perfor-
mance in an ultra-compact form factor at
extremely low power consumption. Flash
forward to April 2013, and we again raised
the bar with the introduction of the new
AMD Embedded G-Series system-on-chip
(SOC) platform, which synthesizes the
next generation of the two-chip AMD G-
Series APU architecture (APU+ I/O con-
troller hub) into one single chip.
We’re extremely excited about this
product and believe it is right for the times.
e Internet of ings continues to grow
rapidly, ranging from roadway sensors
to pacemakers to digital kiosks and bill-
boards. In turn, this creates the “big data”
phenomenon, all of which serves as part of
the underpinning for what we call e Sur-
round Computing Era where computing
becomes a seamless part of daily life and
delivers intelligent, relevant, contextual in-
sights and value in real time through a va-
riety of futuristic applications. We already
see plenty of evidence that we’re transition-
ing to the Surround Computing Era. We’re

It is a huge step for us – AMD is sup-
porting the embedded market in a big way.
e Embedded Solutions division of AMD
has been undergoing a transformation over
the last half-year and we will continue to
evolve into a customer-centric organization,
with an eye to providing solutions that meet
our customers’ – and our customers’ custom-
ers’ – specific needs. e new AMD Em-
bedded G-Series SOC platform gives us the
opportunity to leverage our expertise in new
ways with new customers for the new genera-
tion of high-performance, low power embed-
ded systems. It’s an exciting time for AMD,
our partners, and our customers alike!
But dont just take it from me:
“e future is full of opportunity be-
cause people want information anywhere,
anytime, and on any device,” said Jeff
Groudan, marketing lead for HPs thin
client business. “HP wants to enable se-
cure access to provide that information
while enabling great end user experiences.
With their small size, low-energy use
and strong performance, the new AMD
Embedded G-Series processors are a real
boost towards that goal and we anticipate
they will greatly enhance our future thin
client product offerings.
Embedded is all about creating con-
nectivity and intelligence in things that we
see and, more importantly, things that we
dont see. is is why the AMD Embed-
ded G-Series SOC is so exciting: it will
create opportunities for new designs. Go

Series SOC.
connected nearly all the time, even on
planes and in cars. Networked computers
are in everything, from gaming consoles to
televisions and are even starting to appear
in clothing and ingestible diagnostic tools.
To develop this next generation will
require significant advances on a number of
fronts, not least of which is processor tech-
nology. at’s why our new AMD G-Series
SOC for embedded markets is so cool,
both literally and figuratively. Besides be-
ing the first true quad-core x86 SOC, it is
very energy efficient with a thermal design
power (TDP) lower than 9 watts, yet scal-
ing to 25 watts, meaning the platform is
powerful yet requires little power, enabling
both high performance and fan-less cool-
ing. In reality we see that for a typical ap-
plication our low power G-Series SOC can
run at less than 5 watts!
e AMD Embedded G-Series SOC
provides embedded systems designers
with the opportunity to achieve new lev-
els of system performance and multimedia
versatility in ultra-compact form factors.
Digital signage, digital gaming, thin cli-
ent and human-machine interface (HMI)
applications benefit with a graphics per-
formance boost that enables stunningly
crisp visual experiences. Industrial control
and automation, security/surveillance and
communications infrastructure applica-
tions gain even more parallel processing
speed and precision.
